Castelsarrasin (sometimes written Castelsarrazin , Occitan Los Sarrasins ) is a French commune with 13,944 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie region ; it is the administrative seat of the arrondissement Castelsarrasin and the canton Castelsarrasin .

geography

The city is located on the right bank of the Garonne River . The Canal latéral à la Garonne (German: Garonne-Seitenkanal ) runs directly through the city .

history

Castelsarrasin was first mentioned in 961, when Count Raimund I of Rouergue bequeathed the church of Saint-Sauveur to the monastery in Moissac in his will . The name Castel Sarracenum mentioned here only apparently indicates a fortress that was connected with the Saracens . A conclusive explanation of the name does not exist.

Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac , the founder of Detroit and Governor of Louisiana , was governor of Castelsarrasin on his return from America in 1723.
