The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2004 was also referred to as the queen's stage, as it consists of a 2nd category mountain, three 1st category mountains and the Col de la Madeleine , which at 2,000 meters no longer belongs to any category ( HC), led over the roof of the tour. In total, the drivers had to drive 80 kilometers uphill. The stage was 204.5 km long and went from Le Bourg-d'Oisans to Le Grand-Bornand .
The first attack came from drivers Bartoli and Simeoni. Behind it were Rolf Aldag , Gilberto Simoni and Martin. The two groups were able to unite and break away from the main field with a growing lead. In the main draw, US Postal controlled the pace, but let the outliers do it. Only Astarloza was able to break away from the field, but not reach the top group for the time being.
On the climb to the first mountain of the day, the Col du Glandon , many drivers had to let go, including the sprinters Thor Hushovd and Jean-Patrick Nazon . At the top of the peloton, US Postal continued to dictate the pace. In the sprint around the mountain points, Christophe Moreau and Richard Virusque were able to break away from the main field. Mikel Astarloza was caught immediately after by the duo Moreau / Virusque and tried to keep up, but could not keep the pace and fell back into the field.
On the climb to the Col de la Madeleine, Virusque broke away from Moreau, sprinted to the top group and sat on Gilberto Simoni's rear wheel. When sprinting around the mountain points, Simoni was just before Virusque.
On the level in the direction of the third mountain, the CSC team together with US Postal set the pace, after which the gap between the leading group decreased by one minute.
Towards the Col de Tamié , the pace was increased and the lead of the outliers melted down further. Jens Voigt and Iker Flores attacked on the climb . Voigt fell straight back into the peloton, while Flores reached Martin, who had fallen away from the leading group.
After the Col de la Forclaz , parts of the leading group, including Rolf Aldag, were overtaken by the main field. Richardirusesque, Christophe Moreau and Gilberto Simoni could hold their own up front.
Lotto driver Rik Verbrugghe attacked towards the last mountain and was able to pull away from the peloton. Iker Flores also tried to attack from the main field, but could not break away decisively and fell back into the field. But even Rik Verbrugghe could not keep up after the attack by Team CSC and Ivan Basso . Armstrong closed the hole to Basso again.
After the descent towards the finish, Andreas Klöden was able to attack. A few meters before the finish line, Armstrong sprinted past Klöden from behind and won the stage. Jan Ullrich was third ahead of Ivan Basso.
