The fourth stage of the Tour de France 2004 was a 64.5-kilometer team time trial from Cambrai to Arras . The 21 teams started the race at 2:15 p.m. at 5-minute intervals in the reverse order of the team ranking. There were three intermediate timing points on the stage.
Euskaltel-Euskadi was the first team to start and immediately put in a good split time. After an hour, the German team Gerolsteiner followed, then T-Mobile, which was traded with CSC and US Postal as the favorite for this team time trial.
Because of the bad weather, there were numerous falls and defects, including Tyler Hamilton , Levi Leipheimer , Jens Voigt , Uwe Peschel and the T-Mobile drivers Giuseppe Guerini and Rolf Aldag . The US Postal team won ahead of Phonak Cycling Team and Illes Balears .
The time was then stopped when the fifth driver of each team crossed the finish line. In contrast to the last team time trial of the Tour de France, there was a rule change in this one. Now a team could only lose a maximum of 3 minutes on the winning team.
Here are the maximum distances:
