Otto Hellinghaus

Otto Hellinghaus (born March 23, 1853 in Drolshagen ; † August 26, 1935 in Münster ) was a German philosopher , writer and teacher . Hellinghaus also used the pseudonyms Otto Heinrichs and Otto Lingau .

Life

Otto Hellinghaus was born in Drolshagen in 1853 as the first child of the businessman and banker Johann Baptist Hellinghaus and his wife Johanna Catharina Börsch . After attending the Latin school in Olpe and the grammar school in Paderborn , where he graduated from high school in 1871 , he studied philosophy , philology and history for three semesters at the University of Münster. He continued his studies in Halle (Saale) (one semester) and Leipzig (three semesters). In 1875 he received his doctorate. phil. in Leipzig. From 1876 he was a teacher and director at various grammar schools (including in Münster and Wattenscheid ). For a long time he was the city archivist in Münster. He was also a member of many Westphalian associations. In 1897 Hellinghaus was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , from which he left in 1923.

In 1913 he received the Order of the Red Eagle .

His writings include many historical biographies (e.g. about Maximilian of Mexico ), local history works (e.g. about the last plague epidemic in Münster 1666–1667) and philosophical texts.

He also emerged as a translator of historical works. A partial translation of the Dialogus miraculorum ([Dialogue on the Miracles] by the Cistercian Caesarius von Heisterbach ) was published in 1925 by Deutschherren Verlag, Aachen.

Hellinghaus was married to Mathilde Schlösser and the couple had four children.
