Mairie Montceau-les-Mines

Montceau-les-Mines is a French commune with 18,398 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . The city is located on the Canal du Center canal and the River Bourbince, which runs parallel to it .

The city, first mentioned in 1266, is located in an area in which coal mining has been practiced since the early 19th century , initially in Blanzy and a few other neighboring communities and from 1820 in the municipality of Montceau itself. In 1884 around 6,500 people, almost every fourth inhabitant, were mining active. In the 1880s, an anarcho-syndicalist group, the Bande noire ("Black Gang"), split off from the trade union movement and carried out several attacks on church and upper-class people and institutions in Montceau. The last underground mine ceased operations in 1992, and the last opencast mine closed its doors in 2002 .

In 2007 the city was in the press across the country through its football club FC Montceau Bourgogne . The fourth division had defeated the two first division clubs Girondins Bordeaux and RC Lens in the cup and was only eliminated in the semi-finals against FC Sochaux .

Montceau-les-Mines is twin town of Geislingen an der Steige ( Baden-Württemberg ) and the birthplace of the poet and essayist André Frénaud (1907-1991).

The most famous son of the community is the soccer player Julien Stopyra .
