In 58 BC the Helvetii met the Romans with Confederate tribes. According to tradition (including by Caesar), a total of around 400,000 people are said to have met each other in this battle , with the Roman troops only making up 50,000 men. However, the actual battle took place about 20 kilometers south of Bibracte. Today a museum commemorates the important place in its early days.
