history

Part of the archaeological site of Bibracte , the former capital and oppidum of the Celtic tribe of the Haedu, is located on Mont Beuvray (elevation 821 meters above sea level) in the municipality . In 58 BC the Helvetii met the Romans with Confederate tribes. According to tradition (including by Caesar), a total of around 400,000 people are said to have met each other in this battle , with the Roman troops only making up 50,000 men. However, the actual battle took place about 20 kilometers south of Bibracte. Today a museum commemorates the important place in its early days.
