Monthelon is a French municipality with 384 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
The municipality of Monthelon is located east of the Morvan massif about six kilometers west of the town of Autun an der Celle , which flows into the Arroux below the town . At the western border of the municipality, the Méchet also flows into the Arroux.
Attractions
The Château de Monthelon has been classified as a Monument historique since November 7, 1927 . It dates back to the 15th century and is privately owned. The rectangular building is flanked on the northeast front by two round towers. At the entrances the coat of arms of the Rabutin de Chantal family with the coat of arms saying VIRESCIT VULNERE VIRTUS (“virtue increases through wounds”) are attached as reliefs. The circular gallery in the inner courtyard dates from the Renaissance period .
A small chapel in the northern part has a clearly visible bell tower. During archaeological excavations near the place, among other things, an inscription for the god Amarcolitanus was found.
Personalities
Saint Johanna Franziska von Chantal (1572–1641), full name Jeanne-Françoise Frémyot, Baronne de Rabutin de Chantal , lived temporarily in the Château de Monthelon.
