Barnay is located about 15 kilometers north-northeast of Autun in the Morvan massif. Barnay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Manlay in the north, Voudenay in the east, Igornay in the southeast, Cordesse in the south, Reclesne in the southwest and Lucenay-l'Évêque in the west.
