The Resistance attacked the station. In the tumult that followed, the men and their families were able to flee into the woods. The Germans then looted the hamlet at the train station and set the houses on fire. On July 31, the Germans bombed the community and threatened to bomb other communities if the prisoners were not returned. The church was badly damaged and many houses burned down. Then the Resistance gave in.
