Ardmeinach
Ardmeinach is a derelict village in the southeast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Ardmeinach was nine kilometers east-northeast of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and 18 km south of Port Askaig near Cape Ardmore Point , the easternmost point on the island. The closest localities were the small settlements of Kintour and Ardmore , only a few hundred meters away . At the census in 1841 there were still 34 people living in Ardmeinach. Ardmeinach is no longer recorded in the census data from 1851. Based on the personal names listed, it could have been slammed into the neighboring Ardmore. Today only a few foundations of the old buildings can be seen in the area of Ardmeinach. When the town was abandoned is not recorded. In 1881 there are four uncovered and one partially roofed buildings in Ardmeinach, which could indicate that the village had abandoned it before that time. A hundred years later, the foundations of three buildings were erected.
Surroundings
To the northeast of Ardmeinach are the remains of a dun . The approximately 22 m × 20 m measuring system is located on a rocky hill. The fortification wall was 3 to 4 m thick and has been preserved today up to a maximum height of 80 cm. The entrance could have been in the west-southwest or east-northeast. The remains of a medieval retaining wall can be found in the south. Piled stones in the middle of the enclosed area are recent and have no historical significance. Not far from the dun are the remains of a round hut. This once measured about nine meters and had walls almost two meters thick. The entrance, about two meters wide, was in the southeast.
