Mekseb Debesay (born June 15, 1991 in Asmara ) is an Eritrean cyclist. Up to and including 2019 he was four times African team time trial champion.
Athletic career
In 2011 Mekseb Debesay won one stage of the Giro d'Eritrea and in 2013 he won the overall ranking of this tour. In 2014 he won a stage of the Tour d'Algérie and its overall ranking as well as the Cameroonian bike race Grand Prix Chantal Biya . In the same year he became Eritrean vice-champion in the individual time trial . He finished the overall ranking of the UCI Africa Tour 2014 with first place. 2015 he won together with Daniel Teklehaimanot , merhawi kudus and Natnael Berhane for the first time the title of African champions in the team time trial . He won the Tour International de Blida , Criterium International de Sétif , a stage of the Tour International de Sétif and two stages of the Tour of Rwanda . In 2017 he won a stage of the Tour de Langkawi and became Eritrean champion in the individual time trial.
Up to and including 2018, Debesay was three times African team time trial champion. In 2016 he also finished third in the road race
In 2019 Debesay was two-time African champion , in the road race and with Yakob Debesay , Sirak Tesfom and Meron Teshome for the fourth time in the team time trial . On the day he won the title of African Road Champion, his sister Mossana won the women's race and became African Road Champion.
Honors
In 2014, Mekseb Debesay was voted “ Africa's Cyclist of the Year ” ahead of South African Louis Meintjes and his compatriot Natnael Berhane . The prize was awarded by a jury of 21, which included cyclists Chris Froome and Bernard Hinault .
