The 11th African Cycling Championships were held in Morocco from February 15th to 27th. Road races and individual time trials of the elite men are part of the UCI Africa Tour 2016 in the CC category. The participants from 30 countries each started in the national teams of their home countries.

The patron of the championships was the Moroccan King Mohammed VI.

The road races took place in and around Benslimane , around 50 kilometers from the capital, Casablanca . For the second time, track cycling competitions were held within the same championships. The venue was the Vélodrome d'Anfa in Casablanca.

The championships were dominated by athletes from North African countries, especially those from the host country, which ultimately led the medal table with twelve gold medals. The main reason for this was that many countries traditionally strong in cycling - such as South Africa, Namibia or Rwanda - did not see themselves in a position to cover the travel expenses to Morocco. Athletes from these countries had to finance their trip themselves, which was made possible in part by crowdfunding and local sponsors, such as in the case of the South African Jean Spies or the Namibian Vera Adrian .

The most successful female athlete in the continental championships was the Egyptian Ebtisam Zayed , who won three gold medals and one silver medal in various track cycling disciplines. The fourth gold medal for Egypt went to junior Donia Rashwan in the individual time trial on the road, who was the only starter in this race; She also won a silver and two bronze medals on the track. The Moroccan Fatima Zahra El Hiyani won three gold medals and one silver medal on the track. The Namibian Vera Adrian won two gold medals on the road .

Among the men, the most successful rider was the Moroccan track cyclist Mohcine Elkouraji with three gold medals in the individual and team pursuit as well as in the scratch . His compatriot Yassine Aghaous was African champion in sprint and team sprint and third in the single pursuit . Jean Spies from Namibia won gold in the points and time trials on the track, as did the Moroccan. Issak Tesfom Okubamariam from Eritrea became African champion in road racing and team time trial .
