The 3rd African Track Cycling Championships 2017 ( African Continental Track Cycling Championships ) were held from March 20 to 24, 2017 in Durban , South Africa .

The championships

The continental track championships were contested at the Cyril Geoghegan Velodrome in Durban. The racetrack is open, the concrete runway is 333 meters long and has a 42 degree incline in the curves. Athletes from 20 countries took part; at the first track championships in 2015 there were only five nations.

In advance, the international cycling association Union Cycliste Internationale had sent 20 track bikes to the World Cycling Center Africa so that a three-week training camp for 26 athletes could be carried out there.

On the first day of the championships, Egyptian rider Eslam Nasser Zaki suffered cardiac arrest during the omnium on the track . Despite immediate resuscitation measures , only his death could be determined. The competitions that day were canceled, but continued the next day. Drivers and officials wore mourning bandages. It became known that Zaki had previously complained of pain in the heart area, but after extensive research the cause had not been identified.

The most successful athlete in the continental championships was the South African Jean Spies with five titles, followed by Egyptian Ebtisam Zayed with a total of five medals, one bronze medal on the road and three gold and one silver medal on the track. On the track, the South Africans Jean Spies dominated with four titles and a third place as well as Steven van Heerden with four golds, followed by his compatriots Bernette Beyers with three golds and one silver and Nolan Hoffman , who won two golds.

Some disciplines were on the program for the first time, so that now - unlike in the two previous years - almost all World Cup disciplines were also held at African championships. In the juniors, there were sometimes only two riders at the start. On the website of the South African cycling association Cycling Southafrica the following could be read: "With many neighboring nations on the podium, and even more knocking on the door, the level of track cycling in Africa is definitely on the rise." Track cycling in Africa is definitely increasing, as many neighboring countries were on the podium and others are knocking on the door. ")
