Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada County in California , 267 km northeast of San Francisco . The name comes from Spanish and means "snow-covered".
Settlement of Nevada City began in 1849 during the gold rush . Nevada County was the most important gold rushing area in California around 1850. Nevada City received city rights in 1885. From 1876 to 1942, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad was operated.
In 1900 Nevada City had 3,250 residents, and that number has changed little to this day. In 2000 there were 3001 inhabitants.
