Maarten Pieter Tjallingii (born November 5, 1977 in Leeuwarden ) is a Dutch cyclist .

Athletic career

Maarten Tjallingii was able to win a stage of the Tour du Faso in 2001. In 2003 he got a contract with the Asian Marco Polo Cycling Team . In the first season there he won around Rhede and again a stage of the Tour du Faso. This time he was also able to win the overall standings. In 2006 and 2007 he drove for the Dutch Professional Continental Team Skil-Shimano . In the 2006 Tour of Belgium he was able to win the first stage and defend the lead until the end. In 2008 he moved to the UCI ProTeam Rabobank . At the prestigious classic Paris – Roubaix in 2011, he came third behind Johan Vansummeren and Fabian Cancellara .

In 2014 Tjallingii wore the Maglia Azzurra of the best in the mountain classification for four days at the Giro d'Italia . Two years later, at the Giro 2016 , he also won this jersey for one day after the third stage, in front of his home crowd in Arnhem .

In autumn 2015, Marten Tjallingii announced that he would only sign one contract with his team, Team Lotto NL-Jumbo, until June 30, 2016. He still plans to contest the Giro and possibly the Dutch road championships, then he wants to end his sporting career.

Tjallingii is vegetarian.
