Assan Basajew ( Kazakh Асан Базаев , born February 22, 1981 in Astana , Kazakh SSR of the Soviet Union ) is a former Kazakh cyclist .

Career

Basajew was able to draw attention to himself in 2003 with several victories for the Kazakh country selection: he won two stages of the Vuelta a las Americas in Mexico , a day section of the Cinturón a Mallorca and stages at the Grand Prix Guillaume Tell in Switzerland and the Tour of Bulgaria . In addition, he was able to drive out further podium positions on sections of the Rás Tailteann in Ireland , and the Tour de l'Avenir as well as on three other stages of the Tour of Bulgaria. He also came third at the Grand Prix du Président in Belgium .

Then in 2004 Basayev received his first contract with an international cycling team with the small Kazakh cycling team Capec . In his first year with this team, Basayev was able to win the Tour of Greece and also achieved two second and one third place in the first four stages. In the jersey of his home country Kazakhstan, he achieved one of the greatest successes of his career to date with the title in the individual time trial of the Asian Championships .

In the following season Basajew could not achieve a victory, but with stage placements under the top three at the Vuelta Ciclista de Chile , the Tour of Japan , the Tour of China and the Tour of Qinghai Lake , he achieved further leading results. He finished third in the Belgian one-day race Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen . The greatest success for Basayev in 2005 was third place in the Tour de l'Avenir , the "small" Tour de France for young riders.

In April 2006 he then moved to the Spanish ProTeam Liberty Seguros-Würth . Since July 2006, the team has been racing under the name Astana-Würth , whose first ProTour victory was Basajew's success on the first stage of the 2006 Deutschland Tour . This stage win was his greatest success to date. The Kazakh then took part in his first three-week tour, the Vuelta a España , and finished the race in 98th place.

In the next year, Basajew achieved a first top three placement at the Lower Saxony Tour . In May, the Kazakh took part in the Giro d'Italia and finished second on the first stage. This was followed by a third and fourth stage position, and on two further stages of the day he came in ninth in the top ten, finishing the race in 98th place, like the Tour of Spain. Later in the year he won another one at the Tour of Poland third day segment rank.

In 2008, Basayev achieved the points classification of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey thanks to two third places . He continued to be successful at the Giro d'Italia , when he again achieved three stage placements among the top ten and also finished the race. At the Kazakh road championships he was fourth in the individual time trial and in the road race he became national champion for the first time. After that he also took part in the Vuelta a España in the championship jersey , but could not achieve a top placement.

He had a consistently good season in 2009. A first result as ninth in the stage at Tirreno-Adriatico was followed by a 16th place at Milan-Sanremo . However, he was unable to take part in the Tour de Suisse , which he originally wanted to drive, due to a two-week internal team ban, as he had failed to indicate his whereabouts for doping controls.

He also started 2010 with a top ten stage result at Tirreno-Adriatico . In June he became Kazakh runner-up and in August he finished twelfth in the overall ranking of the Tour of Poland . At the road world championships , he finished eighth.

In the following years, Basayev continued to drive some big tours, but could not achieve any significant stage wins. In 2012 he became the Kazakh road racing champion for the second time since 2008. He ended his career at the end of 2013.
