Dmitri Fofonow (Kazakh-Cyrillic Дмитрий Фофонов ; born August 15, 1976 in Alma-Ata ) is a former Kazakh cyclist and later sports director .
Career
Dmitri Fofonow began his career in 1999 with the Belgian cycling team Collstrop. In 2000 he drove for Besson Chaussures and was Kazakh champion in sprinting on the track for the second time after 1998. In 2001 he moved to the French Équipe Cofidis .
In 2004 he took part in the Tour de France for the first time and made it to a third stage place, eleven seconds behind the winner Juan Miguel Mercado . From 2006 Fofonow drove for the French ProTeam Crédit Agricole . On July 27, 2008 it was announced that Fofonow had tested positive for the stimulant heptaminol after the 18th stage of the Tour de France 2008 . He was then suspended from his team and banned for three months.
In 2010 he was signed by Team Astana after being out of contract in 2009 but still getting good results. After the 2012 season, Fofonow ended his racing career. In the course of his sporting career, he won a total of twelve national titles on track and road.
He then became sporting director at Team Astana and replaced Giuseppe Martinelli as team manager at the end of the 2015 season .
