Giuseppe Martinelli
Giuseppe Martinelli (born March 11, 1955 in Lodetto (Rovato) , Italy ) is a sporting director of cycling teams , former cyclist and local politician. In 1976 he won the silver medal in the individual road race of the 1976 Summer Olympics . He was a professional from 1977 to 1985.
Cyclist
As an amateur , Martinelli won the Freccia dei Vini , the Trofeo Gianfranco Bianchin and the Coppa Cicogna, among others . In 1975 he started the International Peace Tour and finished 29th in the overall ranking. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal , he was initially third in the single road race behind the solo winner Bernt Johansson and at the same time behind Klaus-Peter Thaler ; However, after Thaler was distanced because of what the jury believed was an irregular sprint, Martinello was awarded the silver medal.
After these successes with the amateurs, Martinelli turned pro in 1977. Right at the beginning of his professional career, he won a stage of the Tour of Sicily. As a professional cyclist, he won three stages in the Giro d'Italia , one in the Vuelta a España and in 1981 the one-day race from Milan to Turin . After the 1985 season he ended his professional career. He was able to book a total of ten wins for his Palmares.
Sports director
After his time as an active cyclist, he became the sporting director of cycling teams, initially at Ecolflam in 1986. After two years he switched to Carrera Jeans , where he worked with Davide Boifava and led drivers like Claudio Chiappucci , Guido Bontempi and the young Marco Pantani .
From 1997 to 2001 he headed the Mercatone Uno team . During this time, the victories of the Mercatone Uno driver Pantani at the Giro d'Italia 1998 and the Tour de France 1998 , as well as Stefano Garzelli at the Giro d'Italia 2000 .
In 2002 he became the sporting director of the Saeco team , which won the Giro d'Italia 2003 with Gilberto Simoni and the Giro d'Italia 2004 with Damiano Cunego . After Saeco was integrated into the Lampre team , he worked for this team until the end of the 2007 season.
After joining the Professional Continental Team Amica Chips-Knauf in 2009, Martinelli has been head of the Astana since 2010, which was joined by Vincenzo Nibali in 2013 , who won the Giro d'Italia in 2013 . At the end of the 2015 season, he was replaced in this role by Dimitri Fofonow .
Local politician
From spring 2002 to August 2010, Martinelli was in charge of sports administration in his hometown of Rovato.
