Ruben Zepuntke (born January 29, 1993 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German cyclist who is now active as a triathlete .

Athletic career

Before Zepuntke started cycling, he played field and indoor hockey for the Düsseldorfer SC 99 .

Cycling since 2007

In 2007 he started cycling at SG Radschläger Düsseldorf in 1970 . In 2008 Ruben Zepuntke took third place at the German youth championships in the team pursuit . The following year he was German runner-up in this discipline and fifth in the individual time trial at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . In 2010 he became German champion in the junior team pursuit on the track and sixth on the Regio Tour . In 2011 he was two-time German junior champion in the team pursuit and in the individual time trial on the road, he also took second place in the Lower Saxony tour in the junior classification and fifth in the Pavé de Roubaix , the junior competition from Paris-Roubaix .

In the 2012 season, Zepuntke received a contract with the Rabobank Continental Team . An extension beyond 2013 was not possible due to the decision to convert the Rabobank team into a purely Dutch youth team and to join the Dutch cycling association. Ruben Zepuntke switched to the Bissell Development Team in 2014 and competed in all major US stage races for this team . At the Cascade Cycling Classic in Oregon , he finished fifth overall and won the best young rider classification.
At the Tour of Alberta 2014, he won the first stage in the sprint of the 50-strong front field and thus secured his most important victory to date.

In 2015 Zepuntke joined the UCI WorldTeam Cannondale . After two years without any particular success, the team management informed him at the end of 2016 that he would not receive a new contract. In 2017 he became a member of the Sunweb Development Team , the farm team of Team Sunweb .
After a season there, he ended his career in international cycling and began studying "Sport Business Management".

Triathlon since 2018

Ruben Zepuntke has been active as a triathlete since the end of his cycling career . In June 2018, the then 25-year-old finished second in the Aasee Triathlon in the middle distance (2 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 20 km running) and in July he won the short distance (1.5 km swimming, 36 km cycling and 10 km running) the eighth edition of the Düsseldorf Triathlon .

In May 2019 he finished third in the Siegerland Cup behind Jan Frodeno and Andreas Böcherer . In June he won the Bonn Triathlon .

Private

In addition to cycling, Ruben Zepuntke graduated from the Hulda Pankok Comprehensive School in Düsseldorf in 2013. His mother Klaudia Zepuntke has been mayor of the state capital Düsseldorf since 2014.
