The Speed ​​Skating World Cup 2012/13 (official name: Essent ISU World Cup Speed ​​Skating) is a series of competitions in speed skating organized by the International Skating Union (ISU) . The series of competitions began on November 16, 2012 in Heerenveen and ends with the World Cup finals also in Heerenveen on March 10, 2013. World Cups are awarded in the individual disciplines as well as in the team pursuit. In addition, introduced in the 2011/12 season, there is an overall World Cup classification called the "Grand World Cup". There are world cup rankings in the disciplines 500 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters, mass start and team pursuit. There is also a World Cup ranking with the races over 3000 meters and 5000 meters for women and over 5000 meters and 10000 meters for men. The so-called team sprint is also held at various World Cup events, but only as a demonstration competition for which there are no World Cup points.

The series of events of the World Cup consists of a total of nine events. The World Cup series begins in Heerenveen and then makes a round trip in the northern hemisphere of our earth in an easterly direction to finally land back in Europe after stations in Russia , Kazakhstan , Japan , China and Canada (with stations in Inzell and Erfurt ) and finally with the World Cup Finals to end in Heerenveen.

Races in all World Cup categories are only run at the first and last event of the World Cup. At the other World Cup events, the World Cup program is different, there are events in which only the short distances are run (500 meters and 1000 meters), in other events only a selection of the longer distances are run (1500 meters to 10000 meters) and finally there are Events in which both shorter and longer distances are run.

Point system

Discipline World Cup

On the basis of the last positions achieved, athletes participating in the respective competition are divided into either Division A or Division B. There are now two different point systems for each division. A distinction is made between whether Division A has up to 16 or more than 16 participants. There are increased World Cup points in the races of the World Cup finals, in which only Division A is entitled to participate.

Grand World Cup

For the overall World Cup, the Grand World Cup, only the five best in each race receive points.

There are increased points in the competitions of the World Cup finals. If a course is run twice at an event (which is usually the case with 500 meters and occasionally with 1000 meters), only half the points are awarded.
