Samuel Schwarz (born August 22, 1983 in Berlin ) is a German speed skater who specializes in short and medium distances. His victory in the World Cup race in Japan in December 2010 over 1000 meters was the first of a German speed skater in the World Cup for more than nine years.

Career

After he was active in both speed skating and inline skating until 2001 , he specialized in speed skating. He took part in the 2003 Junior World Championship in Kushiro (Japan). From the beginning of his career in speed skating he was supervised by Werner Unterdörfel until the structural reform of the DESG in 2006. From 2006 to 2010 Bart Schouten's team of coaches was responsible for his development. Since the 2010/2011 season, Schwarz has been looked after by André Unterdörfel, his former sporting companion and son of his former exercise bike Werner Unterdörfel.

Samuel Schwarz made his debut in the Speed ​​Skating World Cup in November 2003 . At the World Cup kick-off in Heerenveen in November 2006 , he ran into the top 10 for the first time over the 1000-meter course. Schwarz was German champion in the 1000 and 1500 meters in 2007 (held in early November 2006) in Erfurt . At the German Sprint All-Around Championships in 2007, Black was German champion in the sprint all-around. He was able to place himself well at the Sprint World Championships 2008 in Heerenveen with 14th place and achieve 10th place over 1500 meters at the individual distance world championships in Nagano .

In his first Olympic participation in Vancouver in 2010 , black reached 23rd place over the 500 m . Over 1000 m , he finished 16th. On December 12, 2010, Schwarz achieved his first World Cup victory in the competition over the 1000-meter distance in Obihiro, Japan , including ahead of the US Olympic champion Shani Davis . That was Davis' first loss on this track since early 2008. In the 2012/13 season he was able to win a World Cup race over 1000 meters in Harbin again on December 16 , after having finished second and third in the previous races. On January 20, 2013, he set a new German record at the World Cup in Calgary on his special route in third place with 1: 07.85 min. He achieved his best result so far in a sprint world championship on 26/27. January 2013 in Salt Lake City with the eleventh place. At the individual distance World Championships in Sochi , he reached sixth place over 1000 meters.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Black initially disappointed in the 500 m competition, in which he only finished 34th. Over 1000 m, however, he took an excellent fifth place, directly behind his team-mate Nico Ihle . On December 6, 2014, at the World Cup in Berlin, he came second behind Nico Ihle in the 1000 m, with which the two achieved their first German double victory since the 1989/90 season.
