The 500 meter race was the second men's speed skating competition at these Olympic Games. After the first of two runs, in which every athlete starts once on the inner lane and once on the outer lane due to the equal opportunities, the Finn Mika Poutala led the field with six hundredths of a second ahead. After a weaker second run, however, he fell back to 5th place. The Korean Mo Tae-bum , who was second after the first run , became Olympic champion . Mo won the competition in the end just 0.16 seconds before the Japanese Keiichirō Nagashima , who was still ranked 6th after the first run, and his compatriot Jōji Katō .

16 participants from 10 countries, 14 of them in the ranking. Disqualified: Sven Kramer (NED), not started: Enrico Fabris (ITA).

The disqualification of the 5000-meter Olympic champion Sven Kramer caused a curiosity in the 10,000-meter competition . After the South Korean Lee Seung-hoon had set a new Olympic record in the fifth of eight pairs, the Dutch co-favorite showed an even better performance in the last duel against the Russian Iwan Skobrew and led by a clear advantage of almost four seconds towards the middle of the race. At the seven-kilometer mark, his trainer Gerard Kemkers pointed him on the wrong track, so that Kramer was finally disqualified by the jury - after he had clearly undercut the existing best time at the finish and had already celebrated his gold medal. Immediately after the competition, the athlete berated his trainer, who also took responsibility for the mistake, and declared that a world was collapsing for him. The disqualification was discussed a lot in the Dutch media; Prince Willem-Alexander , who was present in Vancouver, described the situation as dramatic. As a result, several athletes expressed themselves in favor of Kemker, who ultimately remained Kramer's coach for the time being. Kramer justified this decision with the fact that with Kemkers' help he had achieved several titles, now he could "not possibly drop it". After the 2010 season, however, Kramer parted ways with Kemkers.
