Patrick Beckert (born April 17, 1990 in Erfurt ) is a German speed skater . He is the brother of Stephanie Beckert .

Career

Beckert was able to win medals at national and international level as well as in the junior division. Beckert started in the junior division in 2007, 2008 and 2009 at world championships. He was able to take 2nd place in the men's team fight with his team in Innsbruck in 2007 and in Zakopane in 2009. He is a multiple German junior champion and a 22-time German men's champion.

In the World Cup he has been on the podium ten times with two second and eight third places. In the overall World Cup he finished 23rd over the 5/10 km in his first year among adults in the 2009/10 season. His best positions in the overall World Cup so far are 3rd place in the 2011/12 team and 2nd place over the long distance 5/10 km in winter 2013/14, although a German speed skater has never achieved this over the long distances.

Beckert has so far taken part in eight individual distance world championships, as well as in the all- around world championships in 2012 , 2016, 2017 and 2019. His greatest success in 2020 was winning the bronze medal over 10 km in a German record time of 12: 47.93 min. He also won the bronze medal over the 10 km at the 2015 and 2017 World Championships. He also finished 7th at the all-around world championships in Hamar in 2017 with a new German all-around record.

He has taken part in the Olympic Games three times so far, 2010 in Vancouver , 2014 in Sochi and 2018 in Pyeongchang . In 2010, at the age of 19, he was the youngest male German speed skater to date and finished 22nd over the 5000 meter course with 6: 36.02 minutes. That made him the best German on this route. In 2014 he finished 8th over 5 km in 6: 21.18 minutes and over 10 km in 6th place in 13: 14.26 minutes, making him the best German on both routes. In 2018 in South Korea, he finished seventh (10 km) and ten (5 km), and was again the best German runner.

So far he has been able to set twelve German records in the men's and seven German records in the junior division, as well as eight championship records. He was the first German to run the 10 km under 13 minutes and the 3 km under 3:40 minutes. Beckert is currently the German record holder over 3 km (3: 37.31 min), 5 km (6: 07.02 min), 10 km (12: 47.93 min), all-around (151.730 points) and in the team pursuit (3rd place) : 40.50 min).

Beckert was a member of the Dutch private team Jutstlease.nl in 2015 . This was trained by Rutger Tijssen, the ex-trainer of the 5 and 10 km world record holder Sven Kramer . Since 2016 he has been training with his younger brother Pedro in his hometown Erfurt, according to his own training program.
