The Eissportclub Erfurt eV is an ice sports club from the Thuringian capital Erfurt . The club consists of the sections speed skating , figure skating , ice stock sport , ice hockey and the section bobsleigh . The club gained notoriety primarily through success in speed skating by athletes like Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann . Around 400 members are organized in the association.

history

The Erfurt ice sports club was founded on October 20, 1989, initially with the sections speed skating and figure skating. Forerunners were the corresponding divisions of the SC Turbine Erfurt , which was able to achieve its first national successes in speed skating in the 1970s. In 1990 the club was expanded to include the ice hockey section, which briefly made it into the 1st ice hockey league (see: Ice hockey in Erfurt ). In 1992 the ice stock sport section was founded.

In 1995/96 a 400 m speed skating rink was built, which was opened in 1996 with the German speed skating championships . In 2000 the construction of the self-supporting speed skating hall began, which was inaugurated on December 27 and 28, 2001 as the Gunda-Niemann-Stirnemann hall with the German speed skating championships 2001 .

Seven athletes of the ESC Erfurt took in 2006 at the Winter Olympics in Turin in part and reached two gold medals. In the same year the ice hockey section was spun off from the club and in 2007 the bobsleigh department was established in the ESC Erfurt.
