European speed skating all-around championship 2016
The 112th European speed skating all-around championship (41st women) was held on January 9 and 10, 2016 in the Belarusian capital Minsk in the Minsk Arena . The International Skating Union announced the award of the title fights in June 2013. Belarus hosted the European all-around championships for the first time. The men's all-round event (500, 5,000, 1,500 and 10,000 meters) that has been held for men since 1967 and the small all- around event for women since 1982 (500, 3,000, 1,500 and 5,000 meters) were run for the last time. From the 2017 European all -around championship , the 5000-meter run for women and the 10,000-meter run for men will be replaced by the 1000-meter run.
Martina Sáblíková won the European women's title for the fifth time after 2007 , 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . With three track victories, she confidently relegated defending champion Ireen Wüst to silver. The young Dutch woman Antoinette de Jong won bronze . In the men's category, Sven Kramer set a new record with his eighth European title after 2007, 2008 , 2009 , 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 . The silver medal by Bart Swings was only the second medal for Belgium at all-around European championships. The 2014 title holder Jan Blokhuijsen won the bronze medal. After victories in the 500 and 1500 meters and third place in the interim classification, the Russian Denis Juskow did not compete in the final 10,000 meter run. None of the young German EM participants could qualify for the final of the top eight. Leia Behlau took 16th place out of 17 participants, Felix Maly was 18th out of 20 runners and Jonas Pflug had to drop out of the competition prematurely after the 500-meter run on the first day with a groin injury . Overall, the speed skating nation of the Netherlands was able to maintain its supremacy again with one title and four out of six possible medals.
