Žďár nad Sázavou ([ ˈʒɟaːr ˈnat ˈsaːzavou̯ ]; German Saar ) is a city in the Vysočina region in the Czech Republic . It is located south of the Saar Mountains on the Sázava in Moravia .
history
Around 1100 there was a village in what is now the center of the city. About two kilometers to the north, the Cistercian monastery Žďár was founded by Boček von Kunstadt in 1252 . In 1293 the village of Žďár became the property of the monastery. Iron ore was mined in the area from the 14th century, and the first iron works were built at the end of the century. During the Hussite Wars , the monastery burned down in 1422. Thanks to Georg von Podiebrad , who had it rebuilt, it gained importance until 1638. During the Thirty Years' War the city was sacked by the Swedes in 1647. During the Josephine reforms in 1784 the monastery was dissolved and converted into a castle.
In the immediate vicinity of the monastery, on a hill, is the Zelená Hora pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century according to plans by the master builder Johann Blasius Santini-Aichl and stands out for its unusual shapes and style elements. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
In the 20th century, the population increased tenfold when workers for mechanical engineering and steel industry were settled around the old town center.
Between 1950 and 1960 the new housing estate Na Ptáčkově Kopci , later Sídliště Stalingrad , today Žďár nad Sázavou 3 was built . The residential area consists of around 120 residential buildings in the typical style of post-war socialist architecture.
