history

The place on the Libitzer Steig was probably settled in the 13th century during the colonization of the Bohemian-Moravian border area. It was first mentioned in documents in 1457, when the Cistercian monastery Saar laid out a monastery courtyard. After the dissolution of the monastery in the course of the Josephine reforms, the Karlshof fell to the religious fund in 1784. In 1789 the monastery courtyard was closed. The Czaslau district chief Karl von Libin had the farm parceled out and settled 20 German families. The new settlers came from Rosendorf and named the place after their founder Liebinsdorf or Libinsdorf .

In 1840, Libinsdorf , also called Karlow or Karlshof , consisted of 38 houses in which 234 German-speaking people lived. There was a private school run by the residents and an inn in the village. The main source of income was yarn bleaching. The parish was Wognomiestetz . In 1847, at the request of the residents, the Landesgubernium set up a public German-speaking school. Until the middle of the 19th century, Libinsdorf remained subject to the allodial estate Wognomiestetz.

After the replacement of patrimonial Liebinsdorf / Karel formed from 1850 a district of the municipality Škrdlovice in the judicial district of Přibyslau . From 1868 the village belonged to the Polna district . In 1873 Libinsdorf became independent and in 1884 assigned to the Chotěboř district . The community formed a German- language island in the Saar mountains until 1945 , while the surrounding areas had been Czech-speaking since the Hussite Wars. After 1900 a local branch of the Bohemian Forest National Association was established in Libinsdorf. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia , the conflicts between German and Czech residents intensified. In 1919 a Czech minority school was founded. In 1924 the German elementary school in Libinsdorf was closed after the number of pupils had dropped to 19. At this time, Czech children were also attending German-language classes, and the proportion of purely German-speaking children had dropped to six. The school closure led to a parliamentary interpellation by members of the German minority. After the end of World War II, the Germans were from Karlov expelled and settled Czech families. Karlov has belonged to the Okres Žďár nad Sázavou since 1949 . In 1990 the glass artist Jaroslav Svoboda founded a glassworks in which he produces hand-made glassware.
