history

Originally there was a Schwaighof here , the Chutay (Kuhalm). This is mentioned for the first time around 1288 in the property and income register of the Counts of Tyrol . In 1497, the future emperor Maximilian I was given the right to hunt in the Kühtai area. Archduke Leopold V had the Schwaighof converted into a hunting lodge in 1622 and a road from Sellrain built in 1624 . Emperor Franz Joseph I bought the hunting lodge back in 1893 and used it as a starting point for marmot hunting . Through his granddaughter Hedwig it came to the Counts of Stolberg-Stolberg , who converted it into a winter sports hotel. Since 2016 it has been modernized by new owners.

Already in the 1930s there were mountaineers and summer vacationers in Kühtai. The hunting lodge was converted into a palace hotel at the end of the 19th century. The wave of skiing that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century soon reached Austria-Hungary and with it Kühtai. Based on the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of Labor and Agriculture, the place was developed as a ski area in 1909. After the Second World War, Kühtai quickly grew into a hotel village and is now a popular hiking and skiing area. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1976/77 .

The snowboard and freestyle competitions were held here as part of the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games . At the end of December 2014, women's World Cup races took place in Kühtai for the first time (as a replacement for canceled races in Semmering ).

Between late autumn 2018 and spring 2019 there were heated discussions about a new ski area in the Feldring / Schafjoch area. However, the project applicants withdrew the project that had already been submitted to the state for the UVE assessment and announced a dialogue process.

As in Oetz , an investor model in the form of an apartment complex was also built in Kühtai. In 2016, the historic 17th century hunting lodge with the court chapel in Kühtai changed hands and was combined with a buy-to-let model (investor model) for luxury real estate. Another hotel project is planned very close by, which will probably also be based on an investor model.
