biography

Mattias Rönngren grew up in Åre . He started skiing at the age of two and started his racing career at the age of ten. After graduating from ski school in his hometown, he studied at the Mittuniversitetet in Östersund . He participated several times in the Big Mountain Championships, a freeride competition in Riksgränsen , and achieved fourth place as the best result.

Rönngren competed in his first two FIS races shortly after his 15th birthday in Tärnaby . In March 2012 he took part in a junior world championship in Roccaraso for the first time and finished 26th in the Super-G. In the following winter he made his European Cup debut in the downhill on the Reiteralm , but initially could not achieve any results worth mentioning. At his second Junior World Championship in Québec , he competed in three disciplines and finished 21, 23 and 45 in giant slalom, downhill and super-G. A year later in Jasná he only started in the technical disciplines, but retired in both races. After good results in the Australia New Zealand Cup , his European Cup results in giant slalom improved significantly in the 2014/15 season . He achieved his best result in March 2015 with a sixth place in Jasná.

On December 12, 2014, Rönngren made his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Åre , but then struggled for a long time with failures and non-qualifications. In February 2017, he took part in a world championship for the first time in St. Moritz and finished 27th in his favorite discipline. After podium finishes in the Far East Cup , he was crowned Swedish champion for the first time in the combination at the end of the season, and in 2018 he succeeded for the first time also in giant slalom. Rönngren won his first World Cup points in January 2019, finishing 27th in the giant slalom in Adelboden . In December of the same year he surprisingly finished sixth in the parallel giant slalom in Alta Badia . After further placing in the points, he fell during a training run in Val di Fassa at the end of January 2020 and suffered a knee and collateral ligament injury.
