Fabio Gstrein comes from Sölden in the Ötztal and starts for the local ski club. His parents Gotthard and Anita (née Braunegger) were also active as ski racers; his father was world champion of ski instructors, his mother won the prestigious Trofeo Topolino . You run a ski school in Hochsölden . The former World Cup winner and Olympic medalist Bernhard Gstrein is Fabio's great cousin.
After winning the Trofeo Topolino, Gstrein contested his first FIS races at the age of 16 . In 2015 he took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Malbun and reached positions seven and nine in giant slalom and slalom. In January 2016 he made his debut European Cup in the Zell am See slalom . Two months later, he started in Sochi for the first time in a junior world championship and finished seventh and eleven in his two parade disciplines. A year later in Åre the individual races were disappointing, but in the team competition he won the silver medal with the Austrian team. Towards the end of the season he was named Austrian runner-up in slalom behind Johannes Strolz . At his third JWM participation in 2018 in Davos , he won the silver medal in the giant slalom and bronze with the team and just barely missed another medal in fourth place in the slalom.
On January 21, 2018, Gstrein made his World Cup debut in the Kitzbühel slalom , but did not qualify for the second round in his first race. He achieved this for the first time in 2020 with the high starting number 53 at the race in Zagreb , in which he finished 17th in the end. A week later, he finished seventh at the Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden for the first time in the top ten.
