After good practice sessions in preparation for the 2010/11 season is Luitz qualified for the squad of the German Ski Association in the World Cup . He contested his first World Cup race on January 8, 2011 in the giant slalom in Adelboden , from which he was eliminated in the first run. Although he remained without a World Cup result for the entire season, he was nominated for the 2011 World Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the team competition he was a reserve driver, in the giant slalom he finished 29th.
At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , Luitz achieved his first podium in the European Cup in the giant slalom in Trysil . The following day he celebrated his first victory in the second giant slalom at the same location. With a total of six podium places, he finished second overall. On February 26, 2012, he won his first World Cup points when he qualified for the second round in the giant slalom in Crans-Montana and finished 29th. At the end of the season he became German champion for the first time in the super combined .
On December 2, 2012, Luitz achieved his first top 20 result in the World Cup with 13th place in the giant slalom in Beaver Creek . A week later, he achieved a World Cup podium finish for the first time in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère with second place, after he was in 25th place in the first run. On February 12, 2013 Luitz won bronze with the German team at the World Championships in Schladming, but was not used as a substitute driver in the race. A few days later he was injured while training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament . The healing process went off without complications. Under these circumstances, his third place on December 14, 2013 in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère was still surprising.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics , Luitz would have been in an excellent second place after the first round in the giant slalom. However , he threaded the last gate before the goal and was disqualified. On December 12, 2014, Luitz finished third in Åre's giant slalom and landed on the podium again. Shortly afterwards, he suffered a severe muscle injury in his thigh in a training fall and had to take several months off as a result. In his first competition after that, the giant slalom at the 2015 World Ski Championships , he finished 20th.
In the 2015/16 season he was regularly in the points and six times in the top ten in giant slalom, so that he finished the discipline ranking in ninth place. The following year , on January 29, 2017, at the giant slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he achieved a podium finish in the World Cup for the first time since his injury with third place. After finishing third in Beaver Creek and two in Val-d'Isère in the first two giant slaloms of the 2017/18 season , he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee in the giant slalom in Alta Badia . He was therefore out for the rest of the season and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
Luitz's first race after the injury break was the giant slalom at Beaver Creek on December 2, 2018, which he surprisingly won ahead of Marcel Hirscher and Thomas Tumler . Since Luitz had been supplied with oxygen before the start and this violated the antidoping rules of the FIS at the time (but not those of the WADA ), he was disqualified by the FIS at the end of December. The German Ski Association filed an application for an injunction against the decision before the International Sports Court (CAS), which was initially rejected. On March 15, the CAS approved Luitz in the main proceedings and he was officially awarded the victory, as the WADA code takes precedence in the event of contradicting regulations. In the meantime, he had to end the season prematurely after suffering an inner ligament tear at the World Cup giant slalom in Åre on February 15, 2019 .
