Thomas Tumler (born November 5, 1989 ) is a Swiss ski racer . He specializes in the giant slalom and super-G disciplines. He has been a member of Swiss-Ski 's senior squad since 2014 .

biography

Tumler comes from Samnaun in the canton of Graubünden . As a member of the National Alpine Skiing East, he competed in his first FIS races from January 2005 . He celebrated his first victory at this level in March 2007. There were three more victories at this level, the last one in April 2015. In March 2010 he was first at the German giant slalom championships on the Feldberg and was thus faster than the German champion Fritz Dopfer .

At the end of November 2010, Tumler started in the European Cup for the first time and scored his first points in this division in January 2011. In the 2011/12 European Cup season he achieved a significant increase in performance. He came second and third twice and finished both the giant slalom and the Super-G in 7th place. He made his debut in the Alpine Ski World Cup on February 18, 2012 at the giant slalom in Bansko . He won his first World Cup points during his third race, finishing 26th in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora on March 10, 2012. At the end of the season, he won the Swiss Super G championship title. After these good performances, Tumler was accepted into the B-squad of Swiss-Ski in 2012.

In winter 2012/13 Thomas Tumler mainly concentrated on the European Cup. At the end of the season he won the first European Cup in the giant slalom in Sochi . In the winter of 2013/14, too, he mostly competed in the European Cup and won both the overall standings and the Super-G discipline standings. Thus, he secured a fixed starting place for all World Cup races of the 2014/2015 season and was accepted into the A-squad of Swiss-Ski. He achieved his first top 10 result on March 17, 2016 with 8th place in the Super-G in St. Moritz . In the winter of 2016/17 Tumler was only able to contest six races and had to end the season prematurely due to persistent back problems.

Tumler's best result in winter 2017/18 was a twelfth place in Beaver Creek's Super-G . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished 26th in the same discipline. Since he did not have a single countable result in the giant slalom, he fell far behind in the World Cup starting list. Tumler had to start with the number 48 in the first giant slalom of the subsequent 2018/19 World Cup season in Beaver Creek. With a superior best time in the second race, he finished third and surprisingly achieved his first podium finish. At the same time he ended a seven-year lean period for the Swiss team in this discipline, which had not been among the top three since February 2011.
