Vincent Kriechmayr (born October 1, 1991 in Linz , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian ski racer . His strongest discipline is the super-G .

biography

Kriechmayr, who lives in Gramastetten in Upper Austria , learned to ski from his father, who was a ski instructor in Obertauern in Salzburg . His mother is an art history teacher from Belgium who named her son after the painter Vincent van Gogh .

After reaching the age limit of 15 years, Kriechmayr took part in FIS races for the first time in the 2006/2007 season , but initially did not achieve any top positions. It was not until the winter of 2009/2010 that the then national team runner achieved top 10 placements in several FIS races, after which he was also used in the European Cup from mid-January 2010 . He was also able to take part in the 2010 Junior World Championships, where he achieved fourth place in the giant slalom as the best result and narrowly missed a medal rank. A few days before the Junior World Championships, he secured the Austrian junior championship titles in giant slalom and super-G in his youth class II. At the end of the season, in addition to several victories in FIS races, the junior title in the downhill was added.

In spring 2010, Kriechmayr was accepted by the Upper Austrian regional team in the B-team of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). At the 2011 Junior World Championships in Crans-Montana , he won the silver medal in giant slalom behind Alexis Pinturault . He was also among the top ten in Super-G, Downhill and Combined. At national level, he successfully defended his junior downhill title in 2011. In the European Cup he achieved his first top 10 placements in 2010/2011, while in his first three giant slalom appearances in the World Cup he did not make it to the second round.

On February 23, 2012, Kriechmayr celebrated his first victory in the European Cup in the super combination of Sella Nevea , with which he also secured victory in the super combination discipline classification of the 2011/12 season . He was only used once in the World Cup this winter: In the giant slalom in Sölden , he again failed to qualify for the second round. In spring 2012, Kriechmayr rose from the B to the A squad of the ÖSV. He won his first World Cup points on December 7, 2013 when he finished 16th in the Super-G at Beaver Creek . On March 2, 2014, he finished 5th in the Kvitfjell Super-G for the first time in the top 10.

In the 2014/15 season , Kriechmayr confirmed his performance with consistent results in the top 30. On December 20, 2014, he reached 4th place in the Super-G in Val Gardena . On March 8, 2015, he finished 2nd in the Kvitfjell Super-G behind Kjetil Jansrud ; it was his first World Cup podium finish. He achieved his first World Cup victory on December 1, 2017 in the Super-G at Beaver Creek . On January 27, 2018, he made it onto a downhill podium for the first time with second place on the downhill run in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished seventh in the downhill as the best Austrian. At the World Cup final in Åre , he and his teammate Matthias Mayer won a downhill run for the first time on the 2007 and 2019 World Cup course, thus saving the Austrian men's team from a season without a downhill win. In the 2018/19 World Cup season, Kriechmayr won the Lauberhorn run , and there were two medals at the 2019 World Cup in Åre.
