Johann Jakob Morff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Jakob Morff (* 1736 ; † December 28, 1802 in Stuttgart ) was the Württemberg building yard and theater painter for Duke Karl Eugen v. Württemberg .

family

The Morff family probably came from Switzerland. For the year 1736 a preacher named Salomo Morff (also Salomon Morf, 1702–1756) is mentioned in the country house in Stuttgart. The painter Johan Jakob Morff was a close relative of his. Morff's father was a farmer from Enzweihingen . Morff married Magdalene Wilhelmine (nee Merck, 1730-1791), they had a son, Gottlob Wilhelm Morff , whose teacher he was. In 1772 he worked at Schloss Solitude , among others . There was a self-portrait of him that was in the possession of the painter W. Pilgram together with the “extraordinarily lively” painting made by August Friedrich Oelenhainz from 1786. Both pictures were shown at the portrait exhibition in Stuttgart in 1881. Portrait No. 326 has been lost since 1938.

Act

Morff was known in Stuttgart for his decorative paintings (architectural painting) and his figurative representations. He created “portraits in addition to his decorative work, allegorical representations with peasant figures in misunderstood ancient clothing”. His works included the ceiling painting in the Heilbronn town hall hall from 1779 and allegories “on the teaching departments” of the Hohen Karlsschule in the Stuttgart Castle Museum.

Drawings
A floor plan and two facade drawings of the Evangelical Church on the Solitude with a suggested date of 1773 are attributed to him.

Portrait of Baron Alexander von Buwinghausen-Wallmerode
His repeatedly repeated portrait of Baron Alexander von Buwinghausen-Wallmerode from the years 1787 and 1792 (1938 in the Stuttgart Army Museum) shows the "old cavalry officer in awkward pose". The painting from 1792 is now in Solitude Palace.

Ceiling painting “Justitia”
The senator and chief architect Eberhard Ludwig Becht commissioned the Stuttgart court painter Johann Jakob Morff (1736–1802) for a fee of 150 guilders to create a ceiling painting for the Heilbronn municipal council hall, which was completed in 1779. The picture represented the goddess Justitia , who carried the scales of justice in her hands and was surrounded by figures that symbolized good and evil. For example, a woman on the left is wearing a wreath on her head and holding fruit in her hands. This figure symbolizes the good and prosperity of the former imperial city. The female figures on the right fall into a deep abyss because they also symbolize evil. Helmut Schmolz describes the completed painting as a “ panel- like work of art”.

Draft f. Ceiling painting "Merkur"
A rejected design by Morff for the Heilbronn municipal council hall was much more extensive and made Heilbronn as a business location the subject of the painting - "Among other things, we see here a Mercury, the god of trade, a reference to the bloom of Heilbronn as a trading city". Oval medallions at the corners represented allegories of science, music and agriculture. The last picture showed the Wartberg with the Wartberg tower in the background.
