Life

Gottlob Wilhelm Morff is the son of the court painter Johann Jakob Morff (1738–1802) and his wife Magdalene Wilhelmine nee. Merck (1730-1791).

Gottlob Wilhelm Morff was initially a student of his father before he was admitted to the Hohen Karlsschule for further training in 1788 . Morff became a pupil of Philipp Friedrich von Hetsch at the Karlsschule .

From 1796 to 1797 Morff the Younger was based in Heilbronn. From 1803 he was in Salzburg . King Friedrich von Württemberg summoned Morff to his court in Stuttgart in 1812, where Morff created important miniature paintings, in particular he immortalized the king's likeness on numerous tobacco tablets .

Gottlob Morff created naturalistic portraits of high quality. His long and frequent meetings were feared, yet he portrayed many personalities of his time.

The miniature painter Sophie Pilgram (1808–1870), sister of Wilhelm Pilgram (1814–1889), was a student of Morff.
