Marco Schwarz (born August 16, 1995 in Villach ) is an Austrian ski racer . His strengths lie in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom as well as in the combination .

biography

Schwarz comes from Radenthein in Carinthia . At the age of ten he was accepted into the Carinthian school squad. He competed in his first FIS races in December 2010 and successfully took part in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in January 2012 . He won gold in the giant slalom and in the alpine combination. On January 20, 2013, he competed in the slalom in Kirchberg in Tirol for the first time in a European Cup race , where he was eliminated in the first round. For the 2013/14 season he was accepted into the C-squad of the Austrian Ski Association and has been competing regularly in the European Cup since this winter. At the Junior World Championship in Jasná in 2014 , he won the gold medal in the Super-G. On February 21, 2015 he reached his first podium in the European Cup with third place in the slalom of Jaun . A day later he also took his first win in the slalom.

In the World Cup , Schwarz first took part in a race in the Levi slalom on November 18, 2014. Since then he has been a regular member of the slalom squad of the ÖSV . On December 22, 2015, he surprisingly came third in the Madonna di Campiglio slalom and thus achieved his first World Cup podium; his best result to date was an 18th place. At the slalom in Naeba, Japan on February 14, 2016, he again finished third.

At the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang , the then 22-year-old won the silver medal in the first ever Olympic team competition , together with Stephanie Brunner , Manuel Feller , Katharina Gallhuber , Katharina Liensberger and Michael Matt .

On January 1, 2019, Schwarz won his first World Cup race in the parallel slalom in Oslo . Eleven days later, at the giant slalom at Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden , he finished 7th with the high start number 67. On January 18, he achieved his second World Cup victory in the combination in Wengen. At the World Championships in Åre he won his first individual medal in a major event with bronze in the combination, followed by silver in the team competition and bronze in slalom. On February 19, 2019, he finished third in the parallel slalom in Stockholm . Three days later he tore the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial meniscus in Bansko's combined Super-G without falling. He was therefore out for the rest of the season.

On January 12, 2020, he reached the podium again in the Adelboden slalom with third place for the first time after his injury. On January 26, 2020, he finished second in the slalom in Kitzbühel .
