biography

Matt comes from Flirsch in the west of Tyrol . In 2001 he survived an avalanche accident in which he was buried. After reaching the age limit of 15 years, he took part in FIS races for the first time in December 2009 . In the first few winters he started in all disciplines, with no notable successes to be recorded. From the 2011/12 season he gradually began to specialize in slalom and giant slalom, and in December 2011 he made his first appearances in European Cup races. In both 2012 and 2013 he was Austrian slalom junior champion.

Matt made his debut on November 17, 2013 in the World Cup Slalom in Levi , where he could not finish the first round. In the course of the winter of 2013/14, regular World Cup appearances were added, whereby he either retired or did not reach the second run. On January 17, 2015, with starting number 63, he achieved 16th place at the Lauberhorn Slalom in Wengen , winning World Cup points for the first time. The first European Cup podium followed on March 16, 2015 with second place in the slalom of Kranjska Gora . On February 14, 2016, he surprised everyone in the Naeba World Cup slalom with sixth place, and on November 13, 2016, with a second place in Levi, Finland, he made it onto the podium in a slalom race for the first time. In February 2017 he took part in the Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz and reached 8th place in the slalom, whereby he was 3rd after the first run. Matt achieved his first victory in a World Cup slalom on March 5th in Kranjska Gora; After the first run he was 1.15 seconds behind the leading Stefano Gross in second place, but was still able to beat him by 0.30 seconds.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Matt won the bronze medal in slalom after only being 12th after the first run. It is noteworthy in that the family Matt at the Olympics winning a complete set of medals was Brother Mario won in 2014 in Sochi gold in slalom, Brother Andreas 2010 in Vancouver silver in ski cross. In the team competition held for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games , Matt won his second medal in the Austrian mixed team on February 24th together with Stephanie Brunner , Manuel Feller , Katharina Liensberger , Katharina Gallhuber and Marco Schwarz with the silver medal behind the Swiss team in Pyeongchang. Matt won two more silver medals at the 2019 World Championships in Åre , with the team and in slalom.
