Petra Vlhová (born June 13, 1995 in Liptovský Mikuláš ) is a Slovak ski racer . She has specialized in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . Her greatest success so far is the giant slalom world championship title in 2019.
biography
Vlhová comes from the town of Liptovský Mikuláš on the edge of the Low Tatras . At the age of 15 she took part in FIS races from November 2010 and just four months later she was able to celebrate her first victory at this level. Also in March 2011 she made her debut in the European Cup , she went straight to the points. In January 2012 she won the gold medal in slalom at the first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck . At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Roccaraso two months later she was third in the slalom and fifth in the combined ranking. In addition, there was the Slovakian championship title in slalom.
At the beginning of the 2012/2013 season, Vlhová got three podiums in the European Cup, including their first victory on December 18, 2012 in Courchevel . Eleven days later it had its premiere in the World Cup ; in the slalom of Semmering , she immediately won her first World Cup points as eleventh place. Neither in the 2012/13 season nor in the 2013/14 season did she manage to build on this success, which is why she was increasingly used in the European Cup. After taking part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi (19th in slalom and 24th in giant slalom), she won the gold medal in slalom at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Jasná, Slovakia . She had to wait until December 2014 for the next countable World Cup result.
In the 2015/16 season , Vlhová made it to the top of the world surprisingly quickly and regularly achieved top placements, especially in the slalom. In the first two slalom competitions in Aspen on November 28th and 29th, she finished 7th and 11th respectively. On December 7th, she won the third European Cup slalom in Trysil . She celebrated her first World Cup victory almost a week later, on December 13th in the slalom in Åre . She confirmed this good form with two third places in the slalom in Lienz at the end of December and in Flachau at the beginning of January.
In the World Cup season 2016/17 , Vlhová finally established himself at the top of the world in slalom and achieved two podium places. She also started to attract attention with good performances in the giant slalom. At the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , she won the silver medal in the team competition , while finishing fourth in the slalom narrowly missed the podium. On March 18th, at the World Cup finals in Aspen, she won her second World Cup race. She achieved her third World Cup victory on November 11, 2017 at the start of the season in Levi .
On December 28, 2018, Vlhová won a World Cup giant slalom for the first time in Semmering and a parallel slalom for the first time on January 1, 2019 on Holmenkollen . At the World Cup slalom in Flachau , she achieved the first slalom victory of the 2018/19 World Cup season . At the 2019 World Championships in Åre , she finished second in the Alpine Combined on February 8th - just three hundredths of a second behind Wendy Holdener , the 2017 defending champion. Her silver medal was the first individual medal that a member of the Slovak ski team could win. Six days later, Vlhová celebrated the greatest success of her career to date with the giant slalom world championship title. She completed the set of medals with bronze in the final slalom.
The 2019/20 season was also extremely successful for Vlhová . She was on the podium a total of eight times after a World Cup race. These included five victories in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines as well as in a parallel competition. Especially in slalom, she kept up with the previous dominator Mikaela Shiffrin , but also benefited from her absence in February and March 2020. She also scored regularly for the first time in the speed disciplines and fought a three-way battle with Shiffrin and Federica Brignone to win the Overall rating. Since the season had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , she lacked the necessary points. However, she secured victory in the slalom discipline classification and in the first parallel competition.
