biography

Hölzl first skied at the age of three, and when she was five she competed in her first race. From December 1999 it was used in FIS races , from January 2001 in the European Cup . At the Junior World Championships in Verbier in 2001 , she reached sixth place in the Super-G . It was used for the first time in the Ski World Cup on December 15, 2001 and came in 41st in the Super-G in Val-d'Isère .

Hölzl was unable to establish herself in the World Cup in the three following winters, which is why she mainly started in European Cup races. The first podium placement at this level was achieved in December 2002, the first victory in December 2005. With another victory in February 2006, she secured second place in the giant slalom discipline of the European Cup. Hölzl won her first World Cup points on December 21, 2005 in Spindleruv Mlyn , where she finished the giant slalom in 24th place. After finishing in the top ten for the first time on November 25, 2006 in Aspen , she achieved her first podium finish on March 18, 2007 at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide with second place in the giant slalom. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre , she was sixth in the giant slalom.

Although Hölzl never made it onto the podium in the 2007/08 season , she regularly achieved top 10 placements. The 2008/09 season started a bit subdued, but in January it reached the level of the pre-winter with a third place in Maribor . At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , Hölzl celebrated the greatest success of her career by winning the giant slalom. She was the first German female world champion in this discipline after 31 years ( Maria Epple 1978). This success also meant the 100th German individual medal in the history of Alpine World Ski Championships.

On November 28th, 2009, Hölzl achieved his first victory in a World Cup race in the giant slalom in Aspen . A month later she achieved her second World Cup success in Lienz (in the same discipline). Due to her good results in the World Cup, she qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , where she reached 6th place in the giant slalom on February 25, 2010. At the World Cup finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she secured second place in the giant slalom discipline classification of the 2009/10 season .

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Hölzl achieved three more podium places. Due to chronic back pain, which she had been suffering from since the beginning of the season, she took a break of several weeks in January 2011. Although she competed in the giant slalom at the 2011 World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, she did without the second round and declared that the season would end early. On December 28, 2011, she made her comeback in the giant slalom in Lienz, but failed in the second round. Then she could not contest any more races in the 2011/12 season . Also in the following winter she was not used due to her back problems, so that she ended her sports career in October 2013.
