Marielle Goitschel (born September 28, 1945 in Sainte-Maxime , Département Var ) is a former French ski racer . She was one of the most successful athletes of the 1960s.

Career

At the Ski World Championships in Chamonix in 1962 , she was world champion in combined and second in slalom . At the Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 1964 , she became Olympic champion in giant slalom and won the silver medal in slalom behind her sister Christine Goitschel . In addition, she won the combined ranking, which, however, only counted as a world championship and not as an Olympic discipline. She caused additional press coverage when she announced her imminent marriage to Jean-Claude Killy . However, this was just a joke she and her sister had hatched to make fun of the journalists. That same year she was from the sports newspaper L'Equipe as the first woman to France's Athlete of the Year ( " Champion of champions selected") and the International Association of Ski Journalists (AIJS) along with her sister with the Skieur d'Or award .

Goitschel was the absolute superstar of the Ski World Cup in 1966 in the Chilean ski station Portillo when she won in three disciplines (downhill, giant slalom and combined) and came second once (slalom). However, she was only awarded the gold medal in the downhill two years later after it had been found that Erika Schinegger was actually a man. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble , she was again Olympic champion, this time in slalom, and second in combination. Again, the combination was only counted as a world championship medal, not an Olympic medal.

In 1967, when the Ski World Cup was held for the first time, she won the discipline classifications in slalom (tied with Annie Famose ) and downhill, in the overall standings she was second with four points behind Canadian Nancy Greene . In 1968 she again decided the discipline classification in slalom for herself and then ended her sporting career. She won a total of seven World Cup races (two downhill runs and five slaloms, including the slalom of the 1968 Olympic Games, which was also part of the World Cup).

Important successes before the World Cup

Before the introduction of the World Cup, she achieved important victories in the first snow criterion in Val-d'Isère (slalom December 15, 1961 and December 14, 1962), the Golden Fox in Maribor and (including second place in the slalom) in the Combination at the silver jug races in Bad Gastein on January 16, 1964. In
1965 she won the slalom and giant slalom at the gold key races in Schruns on 18/19. January and thanks to 3rd place in the downhill on January 21st also victory in the combination, in the slalom on January 28th and in the combination on January 31st in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and the Harriman Cup in Sun Valley on January 23rd. March.
At the SDS races in Grindelwald she celebrated four victories from 1963 to 1966 and at the Staufen Cup in Oberstaufen she was in first place a total of five times until 1966. Her sixth win in Oberstaufen was already part of the World Cup in 1968.
She also won the 1966 European Cup, a prize awarded by the sports newspaper "L'Equipe", with 108 points ahead of Traudl Hecher (106) and Christl Haas (91).

With a total of 11 world championship medals from 1962 to 1968 (7 gold, 4 silver), she is the second most successful female skier of all time after Christl Cranz (15 world championship medals from 1934 to 1939: 12 gold, 3 silver). However, during the active time of Cranz, world championship medals were contested annually, during the active time of Goitschel only every second year.

From 1962 to 1966 Goitschel was French champion ten times (four times in slalom and three times each in giant slalom and in combination). Her nephew Philippe Goitschel held the world record in speed skiing from 1993 to 1995 and from 2002 to 2006 .
