biography

Zettel celebrated her first major success in February 2004 when she became world champion in slalom and runner-up in alpine combination at the junior world championships in Maribor . A month later, she contested her first race in the World Cup . The following year she became world champion in combination and runner-up in slalom at the Junior World Championships in Bardonecchia .

She was able to preserve her good form and finished sixth in the combined and fourth in the slalom at the 2005 World Championships in Santa Caterina . On the last day she won the silver medal in the newly created team competition together with her teammates Nicole Hosp , Renate Götschl , Benjamin Raich , Rainer Schönfelder and Michael Walchhofer .

In the 2005/06 season , Zettel was particularly impressive because of its consistency, as she was among the top ten 16 times. As a result, she finished seventh in the overall World Cup, fourth in the Slalom World Cup and sixth in the Giant Slalom and Combination World Cup. At the Olympic Winter Games in Sestriere , she just missed a medal as fourth in the combination. On November 25, 2006, she won her first World Cup race, the giant slalom in Aspen . A month later, she won her second giant slalom victory at Semmering . At the World Championships in Åre she reached fifth place in both slalom and super combined, and ninth in giant slalom. In March 2007 she had a serious fall in the super combination descent in Tarvisio and suffered a broken tibia and nose. In October 2007 she celebrated a successful comeback with a third place at the World Cup opener in Sölden . At the slalom in Aspen in December 2007 and at the 2008 season finale in Bormio in the giant slalom, she also finished third on the podium.

On February 6, 2009, Kathrin Zettel won the gold medal in the super combined at the World Championships in Val-d'Isère . In the giant slalom she finished sixth after the best time in the first run. In the final slalom she was eliminated after just a few goals. In the World Cup she won the giant slaloms in Sölden, Semmering , Cortina d'Ampezzo and Ofterschwang in the 2008/09 season , but had to admit defeat to Tanja Poutiainen by seven points in the Giant Slalom World Cup and came second.

On January 17, 2010, Zettel won her first World Cup slalom in Maribor , the day before she had already won the giant slalom. Contrary to expectations, she could not win a medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics . She was fourth in the super combined, fifth in giant slalom and 13th in slalom. On February 6, 2011, she was third in the Zwiesel giant slalom and was on the podium for the first time in the 2010/11 season . Another podium was achieved in mid-March with second place in the slalom of Špindlerův Mlýn . At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she won the silver medal in slalom; The defending champion had previously decided against a start in the super combined. She was twelfth in the giant slalom.

In the 2011/12 World Cup season , two third places were recorded as the best results. Zettel was somewhat more successful in the 2012/13 season . She won a World Cup race, came second four times and third twice. At the 2013 World Championships in Schladming , she narrowly missed a medal twice (fourth in the giant slalom, fifth in the super combined).

On February 21, 2014, Zettel won the bronze medal in slalom at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . With the 3rd place on March 1st, 2015 in the super combination of Bansko , she reached her 50th podium. On July 13, 2015, Zettel announced her retirement from alpine skiing.
