Rudi Strahl (born September 14, 1931 in Stettin ; † May 4, 2001 in Berlin ) was a German playwright , storyteller and poet . He was one of the most played playwrights in the GDR .

Life and work

The son of a locksmith moved to the Soviet occupation zone in 1948 . His mother's name was Emilie Anna L. Strahl (1902–1981), his father Rudolf Strahl (1900–1944). From 1950 he belonged to the People's Police , later to the Barracked People's Police , and attended an officers' school . His military service lasted eight years, when he left in 1959 he was first lieutenant in the NVA . During this period of service he worked for the publishing house of the Ministry of National Defense . In 1956 he married Alice Strahl, with whom he was married until his death. Rudi Strahl had two sons, Bob Strahl (1959–1997), also a writer, Stefan Strahl (* 1969), who makes music, and two brothers: Harry Strahl (1924–1945 (?)) And Manfred Strahl (1940–2000).

With Sturm auf Stollberg he published his first short story in 1955 . In 1957/58 he attended the literature institute "Johannes R. Becher" . From 1959 to 1961 he was an editor at the satirical magazine " Eulenspiegel ". He then worked freelance in Berlin. In 1973 he became a member of the GDR Writers' Association , of which he was a member from 1978 onwards. He became a member of the PEN Center of the GDR in 1980. His grave is in the Dorotheenstadt cemetery in Berlin.

His books reached a total circulation of around 4.6 million copies, the stage plays over 560 productions. Rudi Strahl's works have been translated into 26 languages. He wrote scripts for numerous movies and television plays. His youth book Du und Ich und Klein-Paris , published by the Berlin publishing house Neues Leben , was also made into a film by DEFA in 1970 . His piece He is back became the basis of a self-creative adaptation by Peter Hacks under the title Barby . Rudi Strahl's relationship to the reality of real socialism was that of a critical GDR patriot who - especially as a comedy play poet - believes in the changeability of conditions and wants to convey this belief in a cheerful way, but his pieces also show deficiencies in the system and moral-political problems an affluent society.
