Joachim Nowotny

Joachim Nowotny (born June 16, 1933 in Rietschen , Rothenburg district (Ob. Laus.) ; † January 13, 2014 in Leipzig ) was a German writer .

Joachim Nowotny came from a working class family from what was then the Silesian part of Upper Lusatia . He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and worked in this profession. In 1954 he passed his school leaving examination at a workers 'and farmers' faculty and then studied German at Karl Marx University until 1958 . After completing his studies, he worked as a publishing editor . From 1962 he lived as a freelance writer in Leipzig. From 1967 to 1982 he worked as a lecturer at the Johannes R. Becher Literature Institute there . Nowotny was a member of the SED . In the last twenty-five years of his life he was paraplegic due to an accident and had to use a wheelchair.

Joachim Nowotny is the author of short stories, novels, radio and television plays. The main focus of his work are books for children and young people; thematically he is closely connected to his home region, the Lausitz . Nowotny was one of the first GDR authors to deal with topics such as the destruction of the landscape and the environment, using the example of the Lausitz lignite opencast mine. Since the mid-1970s to 1981 Nowotny was as unofficial collaborator lecturer of the Ministry of State Security out of the GDR.

From 1974 Nowotny was a member of the Writers' Association of the GDR and from 1978 to 1989 its vice-president. Since 1990 he has been a member of the Association of German Writers . He received the following awards, among others: the Alex Wedding Prize in 1971 , the Heinrich Mann Prize in 1977, the Bronze Patriotic Order of Merit in 1978 , a GDR National Prize in 1979 (second class for art and literature) and the FDGB Art Prize in 1986 .

Nowotny died on January 13, 2014 at the age of 80 of pneumonia in a Leipzig hospital.
