The FDGB Art Prize was an award from the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB) in the GDR . The prize was created in 1958 and awarded from 1960 as a literary prize , an art prize for works of visual art and a music prize.

From 1969 onwards, the awards were also expanded to include works from film, theater and entertainment. It was awarded as an individual award and as a collective award. A multiple award was possible. In 1974 a medal was introduced for the art award and subsequently presented to all previously awarded artists.

The silver-plated or nickel-plated medal shows on the front the inscription "Art Prize of the FDGB" between two laurel tendrils. The reverse shows the inscription "Art is weapon", a saying by Friedrich Wolf . The medal clasp is covered with a red ribbon, into which blue edges are woven and on which an FDGB badge is placed.
