Hans Ticha (born September 2, 1940 in Tetschen-Bodenbach ) is a German painter , graphic artist and book illustrator .

Life

After being expelled from Czechoslovakia , he attended school in Schkeuditz from 1946 to 1958 and studied pedagogy (art education and history) at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1958 to 1962 .

From 1962 to 1964 Ticha worked as a teacher in Lindenthal near Leipzig , from 1965 he studied at the University of Fine and Applied Arts Berlin-Weißensee , a. a. with Kurt Robbel , Werner Klemke , Arno Mohr and Klaus Wittkugel . After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance painter and book illustrator from 1970 to 1990. During this time he, living on Rykestrasse in Prenzlauer Berg , was part of the cultural collection field on Kollwitzplatz in Berlin . After the reunification in the GDR , he moved to Mainz in 1990 . In 1993 he moved to Hochstadt near Hanau .

Ticha worked for almost all major publishers in the GDR ( Mitteldeutscher Verlag , Junge Welt , Verlag der Nation , Aufbau Verlag , Kinderbuchverlag Berlin, etc.) and was also represented in the West through editions of the Gutenberg Book Guild. In total, he designed more than 90 books.

reception

Ticha's art is characterized by “solidity of craftsmanship, a willingness to experiment, original image inventions and conceptual consistency” (Hiltrud Lübbert). He is referred to as the “only pop artist in the GDR”, because his interest in Pop Art, which is rather frowned upon in the Warsaw Pact states, is shown early on and is consistently pursued.

In dealing with the stylistic devices of Pop Art within socialist society and its propaganda images, he changed the revolutionary term " agit-prop " (agitation and propaganda) to "agit pop". In addition to Pop Art, his role models include Fernand Léger , Bauhaus painters such as Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister , as well as Russian Constructivism .

Works by Ticha can be found in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, in the Weimar City Palace , in the German Historical Museum in Berlin and in the House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.
