Frigyes Karinthy (born June 25, 1887 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † August 29, 1938 in Siófok ) was a Hungarian writer .

Life

Karinthy was born in Budapest in 1887. His father (József Karinthi) was a civil servant and founding member of the Hungarian Philosophical Society . His mother Karolina Engel died in 1895, after which the father took care of the upbringing of the six children who were still alive. Frigyes Karinthy began to write between 1898 and 1900: he wrote plays, adventure stories and fairy tales in verse. At the age of 15 he published his novel Nászutazás a Föld középpontján keresztül (about: Honeymoon through the center of the earth ) in the Magyar Képes Világ as a continuation story.

After graduating from high school, he attended university lectures on mathematics, physics, philosophy and surgery. Although he never graduated, he was very interested and respectful of science all his life. According to Andor Bajor, "he believed with every fiber of his mind - you could say blind - that blindness was a temporary phenomenon."

In 1906 he became an employee of the daily newspaper Az Újság . It was then that his legendary friendship with Dezső Kosztolányi began . In the following years his stories, parodies and humorous writings appeared in various Budapest newspapers, but he gained fame primarily through the parody volume Így írtok ti ("This is how you write") from 1912.

In 1913 he married the actress Judik Etel, who died of the Spanish flu in 1918 . With her he had a son, the later poet Gábor Karinthy . In 1920 he married Aranka Böhm ; The writer Ferenc Karinthy emerged from this - very dramatic and unfortunate - marriage .

Karinthy named Jonathan Swift as his great role model ; his novels Utazás Faremidóba ( Journey to Faremido ) and Capillária are subtitled Gulliver's fifth and sixth journeys .

The Hungarian translations of many well-known works are attributed to Karinthy, most notably Micimackó , the translation of AA Milne 's children's book Winnie-the-Pooh . This, however, probably comes in part from his sister Mici (Emília Karinthy), who made at least a rough translation for her brother.

In 1929, he put in the story Láncszemek ( links ) the foundations of the theory of six degrees of separation that Stanley Milgram in 1967 checked in an experiment and the term -world phenomenon Small ( small world phenomenon made known).

In 1936 he was consciously (!) Operated on a brain tumor by Herbert Olivecrona in Stockholm ; he wrote the novel Utazás a koponyám körül ( Journey around my skull ) about it . In 1938 Karinthy died of a stroke.

Afterlife

Some of his word creations (e.g. halandzsa , German: "gibberish") and expressions still enrich the Hungarian colloquial language today . The multilingual Karinthy-Frigyes-Gymnasium in the XVIII. Budapest district Pestszentlőrinc was named in 1986 after him. In 2008 an asteroid was named after him: (84919) Karinthy .
