Gerhard Geyer

Gerhard Geyer (born May 8, 1907 in Halle (Saale) ; † April 9, 1989 in Halle (Saale)) was a German sculptor and graphic artist .

Geyer studied sculpture under Gustav Weidanz at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle / Saale from 1930 to 1933 . He then worked freelance until he began his military service in 1941. After the war he was still in captivity until 1946.

After he was back in Halle, he started again freelance with sculptural and plastic work. In the 1950s he was able to make study trips to Bulgaria, Romania, Ghana and Guinea, which can be seen in the subject of some sculptures.

As an artist colleague, Karl Völker was familiar and friends with him. Geyer created a bronze portrait for him in 1951.

Geyer received several awards. Many exhibitions and participation in exhibitions at home and abroad showed his work. In 1965 he was made a full member of the Academy of the Arts Berlin (East). In this way he was able to pass on experiences to younger master students. Most of his works are bronze sculptures. He also made some medals. He also drew and erased.

Scientist Cube

Of the works that are in public space, the bronze sculpture of Matthias Grünewald in Halle, the so-called “Scientists Cube” (four reliefs by Halle scientists Friedrich August Wolf , Georg Cantor , Georg Ernst Stahl and Victor Klemperer ) and the Albert -Schweitzer monument at Kegelplatz in Weimar .

Two of his works, Girls Making Music (1956) and Pelikan (1960), can be seen in the exhibition “Art Space Inner City - Sculpture Collection of the Bernau Forest Estate”.

Gerhard Geyer was married to Gisela Geyer (born January 4, 1920).
