Carlernst Ortwein
Carlernst Ortwein , pseudonym Conny Odd , (born December 21, 1916 in Leipzig ; † December 22, 1986 ibid) was a German pianist and composer .
Life
Ortwein was born in Leipzig in 1916 as the son of the music teacher Karl Ortwein. From 1927 he was a member of the St. Thomas Choir . After graduating from the Thomas School, he studied at the Church Music Institute of the University of Music and Theater Leipzig : organ with Karl Straube , piano with Carl Adolf Martienssen and Robert Teichmüller, and composition with Kurt Thomas , Günter Raphael and Johann Nepomuk David .
Because of the help for his "half-Jewish" teacher Günter Raphael after his discharge from the university, Ortwein had to leave the university. He continued to study privately. From 1937 he began a pianistic activity on German radio stations. It was during this time that his first compositions were written. From 1939 to 1945 he was drafted for military service. After continuing to work as a pianist, from 1947 to 1949 he was head of the serious music department at Sender Leipzig. Since the station lacked entertainment compositions, he began to compose in this field and used the pseudonym Conny Odd.
From 1950 to 1953 he worked as a freelancer. Then from 1953 to 1961 he was a lecturer at the Music Education Institute of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . In 1962 he received a lectureship in composition and instrumentation at the Leipzig University of Music , where he became professor in 1976. His students include Volker Bräutigam , Michael Heubach , Walter Thomas Heyn , Karl Ottomar Treibmann , Volkmar Leimert and Rainer Lischka .
Ortwein wrote over 100 music for radio plays, around 50 music for films, numerous chansons , choir songs and orchestral works. Of his popular music, his "Pleasant Travel Acquaintances of a Pianist" of 1951 were best known. As Conny Odd he was next to Gerd Natschinski the most successful operetta composer in the GDR, although some works had musical character.
In the 1964 DEFA film Beloved White Mouse , for which he wrote the music, he also appeared as the pianist of the dance orchestra.
