Horst Bastian
Horst Bastian (born December 5, 1939 in Exin , Altburgund district , Wartheland , † April 14, 1986 in Berlin ) was a German writer and screenwriter .
Life
Horst Bastian was the son of a gardener . In 1945 the family fled to Brandenburg . Bastian attended school in Damelang ( Zauch-Belzig district ) and an agricultural vocational school in Golzow from 1946 to 1954 . From 1955 to 1957 he completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in Potsdam . After attending the Workers and Farmers Faculty , he was a student for a year. From 1958 he was briefly a prop master at the Deutsches Theater in East Berlin . After a physical breakdown due to asthma , he became a freelance publicist in 1959 . From 1965 to 1966 he studied at the "Johannes R. Becher" literature institute in Leipzig .
Horst Bastian has written novels , film scripts and radio plays . His first two novels "Die Moral der Banditen" and "Wegelagerer", in which the problems faced by East German youth in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, are described, are among the most important works of youth literature in the GDR . His thrillers were also published by rororo-Verlag . He has written widely acclaimed books for children and young people, radio plays, reports and has given numerous readings in youth groups and companies. Study trips took him to Vietnam in 1980, 1983 and 1985.
Horst Bastian received a. a. The following awards: 1965 the Erich Weinert Medal , 1975 the Art Prize of the Free German Trade Union Confederation , 1979 the Goethe Prize of the City of Berlin , 1980 the Theodor Körner Prize and 1984 a National Prize of the GDR III. Class for art and literature (“For his literary work, especially for the representation of lifelike, active heroes in the construction of socialism”).
Bastian was married twice, since 1973 to the production designer Britta Pelzner, with whom he had two daughters. He died after a hospital stay with surgery.
From 1958 to 1986 Bastian worked as an unofficial employee with the code name "Hartmut Möwe" for the Ministry for State Security .

In the graphic novel “Baikonur mon amie” by Michael Rühl and Sonja Knoll , which portrays the end of the GDR from the perspective of children, Horst Bastian's “highwayman” can be seen on the shelf of the main character “Kathrin”.
