Life

The artist Siegfried Klotz was born in the Radiumbad Oberschlema in the Ore Mountains. After school he did an apprenticeship as a decorative painter from 1954 to 1957. From 1957 he was a painter's journeyman in Reichenbach in the Vogtland . He kept this work until 1965 parallel to his studies at the painting and drawing school in Zwickau with Carl Michel from 1958 to 1963. In 1963 Siegfried Klotz met the painter and graphic artist Bernhard Kretzschmar . Later the two became friends and after Kretzschmar's death, Klotz took over his studio in the academy building on Brühl's terrace in Dresden.

From 1965 he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK) with Rudolf Bergander and Jutta Damme . He finished his studies in 1970 with a diploma in painting / graphics. He was 1970/1971 freelance until 1971 in Dresden with the postgraduate began painting at Jutta Damme at the Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating in 1974, he worked freelance in Dresden until 1975.

Between 1975 and 1978 Siegfried Klotz was assistant to Gerhard Kettner in the department of basic studies in painting / graphics at the HfBK in Dresden. In 1978 he became senior assistant in this department and received the Max Lingner Prize from the Academy of the Arts of the GDR and the VEB Edelstahlwerk Art Prize “8. May 1945 “Freital . He remained senior assistant until 1979. In that year he switched to Günter Horlbeck's class as senior assistant and was appointed lecturer for painting. From 1985 to 1992 he was a lecturer in painting in the Günter Horlbeck class. In 1988 he received the art prize of the FDGB and became head of the basic studies of the painting / graphics department at the HfBK in Dresden. In 2001 he received the art prize of the state capital Dresden .

From 1992 until his death on February 2, 2004, Siegfried Klotz was a professor in the basic studies for painting at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. His painterly work consists mainly of portraits and urban landscapes. Klotz portrayed many important Dresden residents, including Rolf Hoppe , AR Penck , Heinz Eggert , Fritz Löffler and Hans Nadler

“Like generations of Saxon artists before him, Siegfried Klotz came to Dresden in the tenacious traditional belief that he was moving to a capital of art. The centripetal power of the city proved itself with the historical mass of creative people gathered here and with the splendor of their inherited art possessions. And that despite the gray days since 1918 and despite the isolation since 1945. ... The painterly tradition of his color skin is based on Dresden tradition from Sterl to Kokoschka to Kretzschmar and Rosenhauer. How superior she is to Markthelden à la Baselitz is gradually being noticed. ... Man asserts his claim to design in art again. He survived the contradictions. "

- Diether Schmidt , 1996

“In his person and in his work, Siegfried Klotz continued the habitus of Dresden professors from the Royal Academy of Art such as Ferdinand Dorsch , Robert Sterl and Gotthard Kühl . He portrayed well-known personalities and beautiful women and celebrated the backdrop of the old royal seat . His landscapes with the Hofkirche and Augustusbrücke are bathed in the morning light, in which he was safe from the rush of tourists on the Brühl Terrace at five in the summer . Or they are outshone by the sun of a winter, which was also suitable for avoiding interference while painting. There he stood in front of the easel in a blazer with a hat and a palette as long as his arms . More than once it was presented to the public like an original and mascot . "
